Nancy Taylor Martens
1959-2026
In loving memory of Nancy Taylor Martens, 66, of Pleasant Prairie passed away peacefully on Monday February 23, 2026, at Aurora Medical Center of Kenosha surrounded by her loving family, after a long illness.
Nancy is leaving behind a global community of friends and fellow plant enthusiasts whose lives she enriched. Nancy was a remarkably talented gardener whose passion for carnivorous plants was more than a hobby-it was a calling. She possessed a rare gift not only for growing extraordinary plants, but for helping others believe they could do the same. For many in the carnivorous plant community, their journey began with a plant from Nancy and the generous, thoughtful guidance that accompanied it. She did not simply share specimens; she shared knowledge, encouragement, and enthusiasm. Her collections were cultivated with skill, patience, and deep respect for the plants she loved. Whether introducing someone to their very first carnivorous plant or advising seasoned growers, Nancy was always willing to teach, troubleshoot, and celebrate others' successes. Her impact extended far beyond her own garden-her influence took root in homes and collections across the country and around the world. Nancy formed lasting friendships across continents, united a shared fascination with the strange beauty of carnivorous plants. She was known for her kindness, generosity, and unwavering willingness to help others grow-both as gardeners and as people. Though she is no longer with us, her legacy lives on in the thriving plants she shared, in countless individuals she inspired. Each new pitcher, each first successful propagation, and each spark of curiosity in a new grower stands as a quiet tribute to her life. She will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever honored by the community she helped cultivate.
Nancy was born on June 18, 1959, in Marcellus, NY, the daughter of the late William and Pearl (Tierno) Taylor. She was educated in the schools of NY. Nancy married Samuel Martens and later divorced. She was self-employed as a botanist for many years. Her hobbies included gardening, breeding fish, quilting but most of all she loved spending time with her friends and family.
Survivors include her children, Shawn and Reed Martens of Pleasant Prairie; brother, Mark (Sherri) Taylor of NY and his sisters, Pam Persson of AZ and Linda Dunn of OH. Nancy was preceded in death by her parents; longtime companion, Joe Burkett and her sister, Debbie.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday April 18, 2026, at Kenosha Funeral Services from 1:00PM-3:00PM, with memorial services to follow at 3:00PM.
