Obituary

Ted Nohl Barry

February 6, 1938 - July 20, 2024

Ted Nohl Barry was born during a flood on February 6, 1938, in Richland Center, Wisconsin, to the late George J. Barry, Jr, and Alma Pauline (Halverson) Barry. The doctor who attended his birth came to the house by rowboat. Ted was named after his maternal grandfather, Theodore Halverson. He was given the middle name Nohl after Max Gene Nohl, a Milwaukee diver, who set a diving record in December 1937. Despite the water theme of his birth and middle name, he was not fond of swimming and would only get in the water when thrown in by his brother-in-laws!

Ted was the youngest of three children. His siblings were Carol Yvonne (Barry) Brock and Robert Wayne Barry. Ted's parents ran a small independent grocery store called Barry's Market in Richland Center where Ted occasionally worked and did grocery deliveries. As a result of the family grocery store, he had access to Topps Major League Baseball card packs and one of the best card collections in the region. He graduated from Richland Center High School then completed a two-year degree in Business Administration in Madison. He worked as an accountant before taking a job at American Motors Corporation (Chrysler) in Kenosha. He happily retired at age 55.

Ted married the girl next door, Rose Marie Dieter, on August 13, 1960, in Kenosha. Rose is the oldest of ten children born to the late Rubert Roscoe and Lucreda Grace (Propp) Dieter. Ted embraced being part of a large family with seven brother-in-laws, two sister-in-laws, and their spouses. They socialized, played Euchre, camped, boated, and snowmobiled together. At every wedding, Ted and Rose were the couple to watch on the dance floor for their skilled footwork. Ted also had an incredible singing voice and was well-known for doing the best Tarzan call. On the many family boating trips, his Tarzan call would echo off the walls in the locks along the Mississippi River. They were the quintessential one big happy family.

Ted served in the Army during the early years of their marriage. His basic training was at Fort Sill, Oklahoma in 1961. He was awarded as a sharpshooter (rifle). He was in the 32nd Infantry Division Artillery during the Berlin Crisis from 1961 to 1962 at Fort Lewis, Washington. He served in the National Guard until May 1966.

While Ted and Rose were in Washington, they made the most of this opportunity to visit national parks in the region. Yosemite was his favorite national park. This was a catalyst for Ted and Rose to explore many of the national parks across the country. He later shared his passion for these wild places with his daughters and grandchildren when they visited them together in the 1980s and early 2000s.

Ted and Rose started their family in Kenosha with the birth of Darcy in 1968 and Darla in 1971. Ted was very active in caring for his wife and daughters. He was devoted to hard-work and collaboration with Rose doing the childcare, yardwork, laundry, cooking, and household maintenance. He was the grocery shopper and dishwasher, which he always insisted he do by hand. He was the timekeeper; we were never late to anything. He earned the nickname, Weatherman Ted; we always knew what to wear for the day and what to expect. Ted loved history and enjoyed reading history books and watching documentaries. He had many animated discussions about these topics with his grandsons. By far his favorite pastime was watching sports, especially football and baseball. He combined his love of baseball and math into the activity of calculating statistics for all the players.

Ted and Rose's daughters moved to Seattle in 1997-1998. In 2006 Ted and Rose purchased a home with Darla and son-in-law Robb next door to Darcy's house. From 2006 onwards they would spend two months out of the year in their Seattle home with Darla and Robb and daughter, Daily. Ted attended parties, game nights, and live music events where Robb was performing. He became part of the community and was loved by his daughters' friends and neighbors.

In 2019 Ted was diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma. He underwent two surgeries and immunotherapy. The cancer responded to the treatments; however, he acquired a respiratory infection that led to hospitalization in July. Throughout these challenging times, Ted continued to share his sense of humor and wit with his family, friends, and healthcare workers. On July 20, 2024, at Froedtert South Pleasant Prairie Hospital he passed away from respiratory arrest at the age of 86. His wife and two daughters surrounded him with love and music as he passed.

Survivors include his wife, Rose Marie Barry (Dieter) of Pleasant Prairie; daughters Darcy Renee and Darla Rae Barry; son-in-law Robert Benson; grandchildren Elias William Carr, George Bennett Carr, Kieran Theodore Carr, and Daily Inipi Nakai (Benson) Bontrager. Ted was preceded in death by his parents and siblings.
