Terese “Terri” H. Jarvis

1955-2026

Terri Jarvis, 71, passed away on Thursday, July 2, after a heroic 2.5-year battle against cancer. She was an affectionate and charismatic mother, sister, friend, and partner.

Terri was born in Chicago and raised in Tinley Park, IL, and Plainview, NY. She graduated from Tinley Park High School in 1972. In 1973, she met and married Edward Bernas, who she reunited with again later in life. She spent her early adulthood working at popular bars, restaurants, and nightclubs in Chicago, where she built a wonderful community of lifelong friends, including her husband and father of her children, Steve Jarvis.

Terri is perhaps most remembered for her unconditional love for her children and role as a mother. She devoted her life to her daughters, Stephanie, Hannah, and Jacquelyn, whom she gave the greatest joy through good times and bad.

Terri was a painter, an intellectual, and a free spirit who loved to love and never lost her sense of wonder in the world. She was happiest reading or sketching at the beach but equally enjoyed exploring new countries and cultures. She was a constant learner and graduated from the University of Chicago in 2010.

She built a vibrant and creative community of friends in the North Shore suburbs of Chicago, and later with her partner Edward, she made a beautiful home in southeast Wisconsin. She was thrilled to become a grandmother, lovingly referred to as TiTi, a callback to what friends of her youth used to call her - T.

Terri will be remembered for her immense warmth, her beautiful spirit, her quirky mannerisms, and easy, effortless ability to connect to others. She was an enormous comfort to her family, friends, and community and will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her daughters, Hannah Tomlinson (Zack), and Jacquelyn (David), her two grandchildren River and Naomi Tomlinson, her partner Edward Bernas, the father of her children Steve Jarvis, and her siblings Lynn Demarest, Randy Tylin, Phillip Tylin, and Pati Harris. She was preceded in passing by her eldest daughter, Stephanie, and her parents, Helen and Felix.

A celebration of her life will be held in her honor, and the family will share the details soon.
